AIMIS-FYT student project: 3D printer for space

3D printing in space

Transporting structural parts such as solar panels or satellite antennas into space is inefficient and expensive. The Munich student team AIMIS-FYT is working on producing such parts directly in space using 3D printing. The team has built a special 3D printer for experimental tests in zero gravity. The drive technology uses drylin® SAW-linear axis. They are lightweight and completely maintenance-free.

GESTRA is a radar-based system from the Fraunhofer Institute for searching and mapping space debris. Development partner AlpinaTec GmbH relies on compact e-chain systems from igus® for the high-precision three-axis positioning system. They ensure a reliable energy supply and the clean guidance of a wide variety of media lines in a confined space.
